Note: Last year I
joined Studio One, an artist cooperative, and began a creative journey into painting.
From scribbling that first chalk drawing on the blackboard in first grade to art
classes in high school, I always wanted to be an artist. Marriage,
motherhood and a nursing career limited time for painting. Art classes in the
area were nearly nonexistent. I took any art class available through the local
arts council and community college. Watercolor
was my first medium. I loved sketching onto the white of the paper and layering
multiple glazes of translucent color into a beautiful paining. But watercolor
needed to be protected under glass. Worrying about longevity, fading and storage,
I wanted to try oils. When I learned that a local Artist, Oona Lewis, was starting
oil painting classes, I joined. I enjoy
oils and try to keep them clear, clean and as intense in color as my watercolor.
My oils are applied in many glazes, working from light to dark. Starting with
a detailed drawing on paper I can work out any composition and size problems.
Occasionally, I draw directly on canvas. Whether
a pet portrait, portrait of a child, still life, or landscape, I want to produce
a beautiful painting. One that will make someone very happy. -Jane
